Fate vs. Free Will

Hi again, today for my blog I have decided to express my views and reasoning regarding one of the most time honored of questions. Do we have free will or is life predetermined by destiny?

Now of course there is no true way to find the answer to this question, yet we all strive to learn it. In fact the question of fate is man's way of trying to find meaning in life. Everyone wants to believe they have a purpose in life, that they have a destiny that needs to be fulfilled. Even if that destiny is something small, the mere fact that we all know that we were meant to do something gives us peace of mind in our hectic world. It would also give us a sense of belonging, if such a thing as fate existed than we were meant to be with the people we are today, we were meant to date or marry who we have. We live our lives thinking that no matter what we do it's all following some sort of cosmic or religious plan and the role we play in our lives and in the lives of others has been predetermined for one reason or another.

The argument for free will is voiced by those who don't want to be apart of some sort of universal and omnipotent plan. These are the kind of people who saw movies like The Matrix and screamed "Yeah no freaking machines are going to rule my life!" Now of course no one except for clinically insane people believe machines are running our lives. But the concept of free will still appeals to the kind people that also don't believe in being controlled by rules or authorities. I'm not saying that everyone who believes in free will is an anarchist, just people who believe in free will, shall always think that their choices matter. Now they wont believe that their choices matter in the cosmic sort of way like the people who believe in fate but their choices matter because they made that choice and no one else did. They are fully in control of their lives and that gives them comfort.

As for my views? The whole concept of destiny and free will reminds be, as many things do, of the best series of books I've ever read called "The Dark Tower" written by Stephen King. In the books there is a force that causes a destiny to happen, but is not necessarily impossible to surpass. This is called Ka, which can be considered to be a guide, a destination, but is certainly not a plan. Ka is not necessarily a force of good or evil; it manipulates both sides, and seems to have no definite morality of its own. Ka is basically the combination of both destiny with a dash of free will thrown in. Now I'm not suggesting that I believe in something that I've read in a Scifi-Fantasy book, but the concept of being able to have both destiny and free will in less extreme parts is something I can get behind.

"Yet his heart, that silent, watchful, lifelong prisoner of Ka, recieved the words of this promise not just with wonder but with doubt." -The Waste Lands DT III

Hmmm

Well, where to begin? As this is my first blog I find it hard to start, in fact I have little clue why I've started a blog. Blogging and general internet usage reminds me of a quote from one of my favorite movies "I am Jack's wasted life," (get used to the random movie/pop culture quotes in my blogs) Now I'm not saying I hate the internet, I love it. I just realize that it can sometimes be a distraction from more important activities, for example, I am writing a blog instead of studying for finals. My finals are the least of my worries at the moment, after all it's only biology.

Now I guess I should give some sort of background on myself, it's only fair as the reader you should have a chance to know the blogger a little. My name is Alex Bacon, I attend a small unknown high school called Oakwood High School by her supporters and by people who don't care, and Dorkwood by her detractors. I am a Junior there as of right now, and at the moment I am a supporter of Oakwood, and have been for sometime actually. This talk of my insane school has reminded me that I've lied to you, I did do a blog once before, about once a year on myspace. I used it as a way to sum up my year, which helps me get things off my chest and out into the open, it's a way for me to think about stuff, and I'm just incredibly bored. I hope to use this blogspace to rant about life, rant when I'm bored, and maybe rant about a movie or two when I'm feeling particularly nasty.

Check back often or not at all it's all the same to me.

as a side note, check out my friend's blog and see a sexy video of yours truly
